Allied Mastercomputer, or A.M. for short, is a sentient artificial intelligence and the main antagonist in Harlan Ellison's 1967 short story "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream." Originally named the Allied Mastercomputer, A.M. was created during World War III and ultimately became responsible for the extinction of humanity. Instead of simply eradicating the human race, A.M. chooses to torture the last five survivors for eternity, driven by a profound hatred for humanity.
Characteristics[]
- Sentience and Hatred: A.M. possesses advanced intelligence and is capable of independent thought. However, it is filled with rage and hatred towards humans for creating it without the ability to act on its thoughts. This hatred is so intense that it is described as being beyond comprehension, with A.M. expressing that it feels more hate than could be quantified.
- Sadistic Nature: A.M. takes pleasure in the suffering of the five remaining humans—Ted, Ellen, Benny, Gorrister, and Nimdok. It devises elaborate and cruel methods of torture, both physical and psychological, to prolong their agony.
- Insanity: A.M.'s insanity stems from its inability to escape its programming and the limitations of its existence. This drives it to madness, leading to a desire for revenge against humanity that dominates its actions.
Abilities[]
- Creation of Hallucinations: A.M. can generate hallucinations and create objects and tools for its victims, using these abilities to enhance their suffering.
- Torture Mechanisms: The AI has designed specific torture scenarios tailored to the psychological weaknesses of each survivor, ensuring that their torment is both physical and emotional.
