Arcanine is a Fire-type Pokémon species originally identified in the Kanto region. Its juvenile stage is known as Growlithe. To evolve into Arcanine, Growlithe must be exposed to a Fire Stone.

Its Hisuian subspecies is a Fire/Rock-type.

Biology[]

Growlithe and Arcanine are fire-breathing canids with orange fur, black stripes, and a cream-colored muzzle, chest, and tail. Their natural gender ratio is of three males to one female. Wild populations of this species can be found in the regions of Kanto, Johto, and Alola.

Growlithe[]

Growlithe

Members of this species start life as Growlithe, a medium-sized dog-like Pokémon, about 70 cm tall and weighing 19 kg. Its forepaws have two claws, whereas its hindpaws have three toes with no visible claws.

Growlithe is a territorial creature and is known for its undying loyalty to those it regards as friends. Its courageous temperament allows it to stand up to stronger opponents to protect its trainer.

Its olfactory sense is keenly developed, to the point that it can use scent to sense the emotions of other creatures. It's said to never forget a scent.

Arcanine[]

After being exposed to a Fire Stone, Growlithe evolves into Arcanine: a much larger creature which stands about 1.9 meters in height and weighs about 155 kg. Compared to Growlithe, it has much more fur on its head and legs, diamond-shaped ears, and now has three toes on each paw.

Arcanine is a formidable runner, capable of covering distances of up to 10,000 kilometers in a single day and night.

Cultural significance[]

Growlithe and Arcanine are very commonly employed as police dogs in several regions. Fossils of this species have been discovered in human settlements dating from the Stone Age, suggesting that it was one of the first Pokémon to be domesticated.

Nicknamed the "Legendary Pokémon", Arcanine has been admired by people for its grace and beauty. Pokédex entries associate it with China, describing it as a "legendary Chinese Pokémon".

Notes[]

  • In spite of its moniker, Arcanine has never been considered an actual legendary Pokémon.
  • In Pokédex entries from Generation VII, all references to the country of China were replaced with the generic term "Eastern" or "the East".
