Asamad Van Ghoul, later known by the name of Asmodeus, is a demonic spirit and one of the thirteen ghosts who were originally imprisoned within the mystical Chest of Demons.
History[]
Asamad was originally a great wizard and an ancestor of Vincent Van Ghoul. However, as he grew in power and ambition, he eventually became a threat to the world and, stripped of his mortal form, transformed into the demonic spirit Asmodeus, who was sealed within the Chest of Demons by King Solomon along with twelve other spirits. Together, these thirteen entities were regarded as the most dangerous and most powerful ghosts in the world, and only the Chest could contain them and prevent them from spreading further chaos and havoc.
The Chest, which can only be opened by the living as opposed to by spirits, was eventually opened twice: first by Asamad's descendant Vincent and his colleague Mortifer Quinch in the early 20th century; and many decades later by Scooby-Doo and Shaggy Rogers, who were tricked into doing so by Bogel and Weerd. On both occasions, the thirteen ghosts escaped and the ones who had opened the Chest were forced to recapture them, one by one. At the second time, Shaggy and Scooby, along with Daphne Blake, Scrappy-Doo and Flim-Flam, and guided by Vincent Van Ghoul himself; managed to recapture only twelve of the ghosts, whereas the thirteenth, Asmodeus, evaded their efforts.
Since there was no sign of Asmodeus in the following years, what truly happened to him after he escaped the Chest remains unknown. His spirit did appear to Vincent shortly after the attempted arrest of Mortifer Quinch, who had disguised himself as Asmodeus after faking his own death in an elaborate attempt to acquire the Chest of Demons and sell it to the highest bidder. Although brief, this apparition seemed significant, as it showed the misty image of Asamad in his demonic form turning back into his human form before ascending. An explanation offered to Vincent by Velma Dinkley suggests that after being released from the Chest, the real Asmodeus wasn't seeking revenge but rather redemption. As such, he had spent all these years acting as a guardian spirit, looking after Vincent and his friends to protect them. Vincent seemed to accept this idea, although Velma later admitted to Flim-Flam that she didn't believe her own explanation (as she didn't believe that the thirteen ghosts were real in the first place) and only made it up to make Vincent feel better.
