The Billywig is a species of magical flying insects native to Australia.
Overview[]
Its body is about half an inch long and vivid blue in color. Its wings, attached to the top of its head, rotate at enormous speed, causing its entire body to spin and making it almost impossible to spot it as it flies. Its abdomen ends in an extremely elongated stinger, with which it injects a kind of venom that provokes "giddiness", followed by temporary levitation. If the victim shows a particularly severe allergy, the levitation might become permanent.
Wizards are known to use dried Billywig stingers as an ingredient in some potions, not to mention the recipe for a type of candy known as Fizzing Whizzbees.
The British Ministry of Magic classifies the Billywig as an XXX species, meaning "competent wizards should cope".
Notes[]
- The insect's design was inspired from details from dragonflies, beetles, and hummingbirds.
