Myriapods are a subphylum of arthropods that include centipedes, millipedes, arthropleurids, pauropods, and symphylas. As a whole, they are notable for their many pairs of legs, which can be vastly varied in number, even amongst members of the same species. To compensate for this they usually have elongated, almost serpentine body structures.
In media, they are less common than other classes of arthropods, with the most common to be found being centipedes. Secondary are millipedes, which are fairly uncommon but do appear in numerous media sources. Arthropleurids appear, although usually only in prehistoric fiction. Pauropods and Symphylas are unheard of, being far less well known.
