Chaos, the "God of Destruction", is the protector of the Chao race and original guardian of the Chaos Emeralds. He was originally a regular Chao who got mutated by the power of the Master Emerald and became a shapeshifting entity, made out of water-like chaos energy, capable of absorbing the power of the emeralds and assuming increasingly powerful forms as a result.

History

Thousands of years ago, a tribe of echidnas attacked the shrine on Angel Island where Chaos arised to protect the Chao. As he retaliated he destroyed nearly all of the invaders. An echidna called Tikal used the power of the Master Emerald to trap Chaos within it, preventing the complete destruction of her race. Many generations later, Knuckles the Echidna became the guardian of the Master Emerald, but knew nothing about Chaos. The ancient creature ended up being released by Dr. Eggman.
