The Crimson Splitjaw is a large, legless reptile found in the 3rd Layer of the Abyss. Its threat capacity is Deadly.

Overview[]

Crimson Splitjaws resemble large slugs with reptilian features. Their bodies are elongated and worm-like, the heads in particular being significantly broader and heavier in shape. The heads consist largely of a snake-like mouth, with vestigial eye stalks on top of its head, and a cluster of white warts on the bottom jaw. Different scales consist of different portions of its body: the upper belly is crimson red, the rest of its lower body is black, and the upper half of it is bluish scutes with some red sprinkled in.

Besides slithering on the ground, Crimson Splitjaws are also capable of spreading the rims on the sides of their heads into a large hood, allowing them to catch strong wind currents and glide in the air. They also possess force field-sensing organs below their jaws, specifically resembling white bulges with three small holes.

Crimson Splitjaws are generally found in or near holes and landmarks all throughout the 3rd Layer. While they have been documented ascending to the upper layers on air currents in search of prey, they rarely frequent the shallower regions of these areas.

Crimson Splitjaws prey on any animal they can fit into their mouths. Prey is typically dealt with via a crushing bite before being swallowed whole, but they have been known to use their sheer body strength as weapons as well if said prey is difficult to handle. This extends to any animals that attempt to hide in hard-to-reach places like narrow gaps, as they'll attempt to burrow into any gaps they find using their strong heads. Splitjaws are extremely aggressive, ruthlessly attacking enemies until they're either dead or become too dangerous to safely hunt. Even if they're driven off, an individual Splitjaw can remember what animal specifically attacked them, and they have been known to carry grudges for long periods of time.

For reasons unknown, Splitjaws will regularly swallow any relics or minerals they find. Delvers can often extract these valuables from their excrement, although killing them and removing the valuables from their sacs isn't out of the question. Their meat tastes terrible, but it's still relatively edible.
