Darth Sidious; a.k.a. Emperor Palpatine, and known simply as the Emperor during his reign; was the ruthless leader of the Galactic Empire and a Sith Lord trained to harness the power of the dark side of the Force, which has disfigured his appearance to the point that he no longer appears human.
Biography[]
Formerly Senator Palpatine from the planet Naboo, Darth Sidious was later elected Chancellor of the Galactic Republic and took advantage of the Clone Wars crisis (which was secretly manipulated by him) in order to restructure the government into a fascist autocracy known as the Galactic Empire. One of his first acts as Emperor was to order the extermination of the Jedi Knights.
An oppressive, xenophobic despot, Sidious ruled for a period of 23 years, during which he and his reign were opposed by the Rebel Alliance, which sought to restore the Republic. This was finally achieved following the death of the Emperor, at the hands of his own apprentice, Darth Vader.

Notes[]
- In The Empire Strikes Back, the Emperor appears only as a hologram and is portrayed physically by Elaine Baker (who was the wife of make-up designer Rick Baker) and voiced by Clive Revill. Chimpanzee eyes were digitally superimposed over Baker's face to give the character an inhuman appearance, showing how the dark side of the Force had disfigured him. In Return of the Jedi, the Emperor appears in person, now portrayed by Ian McDiarmid using heavy prosthetic make up.
