Darwin is a genetically-augmented chimpanzee owned by Prof. Mathers, who used a molecular approach to genetics in an attempt to accelerate evolution an increase brain capacity. Although Darwin remained unable to speak, he soon became able to perform complex tasks in the lab, and his intellect was described as almost human.
