A displacer beast is a s a monstrous Fey magical beast creature from the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

Displacer beasts are large cat-like creatures with six legs and a pair of long tentacles sprouting from their shoulders. They are covered in a pelt of blue-black fur. They are usually about 9 feet long, but the occasional mutant can be twice this size. In the game, the beasts resemble black pumas with a pair of powerful black tentacles sprouting from its shoulders, and two to four additional forelimbs each, and primarily live in temperate hills or mountains.

They are colored blue-black, like a dark panther. The tentacles are tipped with horny edges which can inflict terrible wounds and resemble the club-shaped catching tentacles of a squid.

In the Dungeons & Dragons game, displacer beasts are shown to be extremely fierce and vicious beings, that mostly hate all other creatures. They are sapient, magical felines who often kill purely for pleasure, even though they don't usually fight among themselves. They possess a magical ability colloquially known as a "displacement", a form of illusion which causes the cats to appear to be a few feet away from where they actually are (always three feet away from its actual position in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons). The ability makes the creatures very hard to hit at all ranges, while they attack from mid-range with their long tentacles.

Like many big cats, displacer beasts are often pack hunters, although they are sometimes encountered alone. The displacer beast is the natural enemy of the blink dog. Their allignment is classified as Lawful Evil.

The hide of a displacer beast has many useful magical properties, making it highly sought after by wizards and alchemists. Many thieves also use the eyes of displacer beasts as good luck charms, believing that they will protect the bearer from detection.

  • In the Eberron campaign setting, the displacer beast is the heraldic beast of the dragonmarked House Thuranni.
