Dr. Paulsen was a scientist working in an experimental base in Antarctica at some point the 1980s. He notably managed to create climate adapters which allowed him to alter the weather in a local, and eventually global scale. He also seems to have performed experiments on himself, as he eventually mutated into a white-haired humanoid beast resembling the legendary Yeti.
After his mutation, Paulsen is seemingly able to shift at will between his human form and his Yeti-like form. This mutated form is extremely strong and seemingly unaffected by stun guns. It seems likely that he possesses some enhanced regenerative capacity, as even as his human body is declared dead he's still able to resurface in his monstrous form. Despite his bestial appearance and behavior, he fully retains his intellect and is still capable of speech. He reverts to his original human form after death.
As the nuclear submarine USOS Seaview is sailing through the Antarctic ocean, heading towards Paulsen's science base to find out why it had seemingly cut off communication; they suddenly find that the sea's temperature is much higher than it should be for that latitude. In the place where the base should be they spot out a lush tropical island, roughly a hundred miles from the continent.
As it turns out, Paulsen and his colleagues had been experimenting with climate alteration. The personal of the base have been killed, and two unconscious survivors - Paulsen and a man called Rayburn - are brought aboard. Much to their horror, the crew later discovers that a murderous white-haired humanoid is loose in the ship. Paulsen is seemingly found dead, but continues to roam through the ship and attack the crew in his monstrous form.
Things take a turn for the worst, as the crew receives news from Washington. Something went terribly wrong with Paulsen's equipment and the climate of the entire planet is becoming affected. While the Antarctic waters keep warming up, the rest of the world is effectively freezing.
Now aware of the monster's identity as Dr. Paulsen, Admiral Nelson tries to reason with him, but to no avail. Paulsen wants to exert control over the world's weather and plans to turn Nelson (and possibly the entire human race) into a mutant like him. He is stopped and killed just in time as the rest of the crew comes in to save Nelson and later bombard the island, destroying Paulsen's equipment and allowing the world's weather patterns to return to normal.
