The Fairies are small aerial creatures that appeared in the film, Pan's Labyrinth.

Overview[]

A fairy looks slightly different than any other versions from other stories and media. In It's humanoid form it has a slender, elegant body similar to a monkey with no clothing, pointy ears similar to elves, and wings resembling leaves rather than insect wings. The fairy can also tranform into a stick bug as shown in the film. It is Implied from the book that the fairies can "metamorphize" into anything they please and its apart of their nature as fairies. Three fairies are owned as pets by the Faun before two of them were eaten by the Pale Man. The eaten fairies were seen again along with their survived counterpart in the Underworld near the end of the film.

Notes[]

  • The inclusion of the fairies are inspired by a mounted malaysian stick insect which Del Toro kept in his childhood.
  • The fairies' insect forms were supposed to look like fictional phasmids.
  • During the production of the film, the stick bugs which were used as references for the fairies' insect forms were named "Cheech" and "Chong", not before they passed away.
  • Despite their sapience, they can be owned as pets, as stated above.
  • The fairies form appear to be that of an insect, as stated from the book and shown during the film. The fairy only appeared to transform when shown Ofeilia's fairy book, as to ease (or manipulate?) Ofeilia. Its also stated in the book that the fairies have many different forms and it is almost somewhat of a habit to change it.
