The Ghost of Christmas Past is the second of four spirits which visited Ebenezer Scrooge in the night before Christmas, seven years after the death of Jacob Marley.
Overview[]
The spirit is one of the three representatives of Christmas and helps Scrooge revive moments of his past holidays, from his childhood to his young adulthood, including his troubled life during the holiday season. Scrooge sees the mistakes that his earlier self committed and some of the reasons that he became such a bitter man.
The physical appearance of this spirit is said to flicker, and is described as having both child-like and old-like features. It apparently looks like an old man, but with the proportions of a child. Its hair is long and white, but its skin has no wrinkles. Its arms are long and powerful, suggestive of some physical strength. It wears a white tunic and is seen holding a branch of green holly in its hand. Its body also irradiates light.
Like Ariel from The Tempest, the Ghost of Christmas Past has been variously portrayed as male, female or androgynous. It's also sometimes reminiscent of an Angel.
