A Gedächtnis Esser is a peculiar Wesen species known for their ability to probe minds and steal their victims' memories.
Biology[]
Like all Wesen, Gedächtnis Essers are liminal beings which alternate between a human and a non-human form. In the latter, their skin becomes red and they lose all their hair, their teeth become sharp and they grow tentacles on the sides of their head and chin.
Although they look soft, their tentacles are actually used to perforate the back of the victim's skull, leaving four circular wounds at the back of the head. When their tentacles are inserted into the skull of the victim, the Gedächtnis Esser absorbs the victim's knowledge and memories, leaving the victim alive but amnesic, unable to recall even their own identity, let alone that of their attacker.
Although the biological mechanism behind their memory-stealing abilities is not known, it's been speculated to have something to do with the electrical charges in the brain.
In some cases, Gedächtnis Essers have been known to be negatively affected or even traumatized by the memories they steal.
Culture and society[]
Due to their memory-absorbing abilities, Gedächtnis Essers are highly adept at espionage, being able to steal knowledge and leave no evidence of their crimes as their amnesic victims would never know who attacked them. Historically, they've also been known to kill victims to steal their identities, as they would know everything about the victim's life.
