The Giant Squid is an enormous cephalopod which inhabits the waters of the Great Lake (a.k.a. Black Lake) in Hogwarts. It appears to be mostly friendly towards the students.

- Although giant squids exist in real life, this is almost certainly a fictional and magical species, as there are no known cephalopod species capable of surviving in freshwater. Even if it's assumed that the Hogwarts lake is a saltwater lake (which doesn't seem to be the case), actual giant squids can only live in the great depths of open oceans, and aren't known to inhabit any landlocked water body.
- The Hogwarts giant squid has also been fed toast, which is not something a real squid would be likely to eat, as they are strict carnivores.
