Haploteuthis ferox is a species of large predatory squids, first identified off the coast of England. Unlike regular squids, members of this species regularly prey upon humans.

Biology[]

Members of this species have been described as being about the size of a pig, with tentacles that extend for several feet. They seem to live in groups of about eight or more individuals, and hunt down prey on the shores, including human prey. They produce a soft purring sound which might be a form of communication, although, like many sea organisms, they're also bioluminescent.

Unlike all other squids, Haploteuthis has demonstrated the ability to crawl on dry land, venturing onto rocks and even beaches, although it still cannot survive for long on dry air. When out of water, the animal appears like a large octopus, with glistening leathery skin and flexible coiling tentacles.

Most curiously, the mouth, which is surrounded by the tentacles, has a downward bend to it, and an excrescence at the bend which seems slightly reminiscent of a nose. This along with the large eyes of the mollusk, make it look like it has a grotesque imitation of a human face.
