Heracles; known to the Romans as Hercules; is a Greek demigod, the bastard son of the god Zeus and a mortal woman named Alcmene. He was raised by his mother and foster father, Amphitryon. As the strongest man to have ever lived, he is featured in an enormous number of classic stories, usually in a heroic role.

Even though he was named after Zeus' wife Hera, in a preemptive attempt to placate her anger, the goddess still hated Heracles, as she considered him a reminder of her husband's infidelity. As a revenge, she caused Heracles to go insane and kill his wife Megara and their children.

After that, Heracles was sent to perform his famous Twelve Labours. He also took part in the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts and other ventures, and was the one responsible for freeing Prometheus from the rock to which he'd been bound as punishment for giving fire to mankind.
