Hilda is the titular protagonist in both the award-winning graphic novels and the Netflix animated series of the same name.

She was temporarily placed under a changeling spell that magically transformed her into a Troll. Hilda and her mother, Johanna are both descendants of mystical Fairies, which in turn make them each a hybrid.

Overview[]

As a human, Hilda is noticably an ordinary 11-year-old girl, apart from her turquoise-blue hair. When she was turned into a Troll, she developed superhuman strength and athletic abilities, on par with the rest of the species, as well as a vulnerability to the sound of bells ringing, which sound much louder to Trolls' ears; and the ability to communicate with other Trolls. Like all members of the species, she would turn into stone when in contact with sunlight, and revert back to normal at night. Unlike most Trolls, however, she still possessed hair, and her feet still had toes, while most Trolls' feet are toeless.

History[]

An average girl, Hilda lived a wilderness life with her single mother Johanna and pet Deerfox companion Twig, ever since she was born while isolated in the middle of nowhere for miles away from any civilization until retribution stuck between them, when a group of Elves attacked and rubbished her house after heeding their warnings. Concerned with guilt, Johanna decided that they might have to move to Trolberg, a city that's entirely surrounded by a giant wall. However, Hilda regardless refused to leave her home behind and would need to find some way to make peace with the little people. At the end, even as she befriended an Elf named Alfur and managed to reach a diplomatic agreement with the Elf village; she was still forced to move to Trolberg when her house was accidentally destroyed by a Giant.

Despite earlier concerns about leaving behind the woods in which she had grown up, Hilda did eventually adapt to living in the city, where she became a member of the Sparrow Scouts organization and befriended other children such as David and Frida, as well as partaking in numerous adventures involving supernatural creatures; usually without the approval of her mother. She has helped and befriended beings such as a Thunderbird that's erroneously believed as the Great Raven and Tontu the Nisse; who came to reside in her house after the formerly-resident Nisse retrieved her pet Barghest, named Jellybean, and moved out.

During a particular incident involving one of Tontu's portals to Nowhere Space, Hilda ended up being transported to the mysterious Stone Forest, in the interior of the Trolls' mountains, along with her mother and Twig. There, the three of them were pursued by a hostile Troll, but were assisted by a Troll mother and her young child, Baba. After escaping the mountain with the help of Tontu and Raven, they returned to their own house safely. Unknown to all, however, Baba's mother performed a changeling spell that caused Hilda and Baba to switch places (and species). As a result, Baba was transported to Johanna's house and became human; while Hilda was transported back to the mountain and became a Troll. Baba's mother explained later that she thought the two would be better off this way, as she perceived that Baba was a gentle soul that would enjoy the sheltered life within the walls of Trolberg and that Johanna would take good care of her; while Hilda was brave and adventurous, feeling more at home in the wild outdoors where she could have more freedom.

However, Hilda still wanted to become human again, and sought help from an imprisoned eyeless Troll named Trundle, who promised to reverse the spell if she completed a number of tasks for him, including retrieving a red orb (actually Trundle's own cyclopic eye; which had been taken from him by his brother), and removing the bells on his cell's entrance to enable him to escape. Meanwhile, Johanna had been looking for Hilda, being assisted by Twig, Tontu, a tracking creature, and even Erik Ahlberg and his squad of Troll hunters from Trolberg Safety Patrol. When Hilda was reunited with her mother; as well as Baba with her own mother, who'd come to regret her earlier decision; the spell was broken, and Hilda became human again, proving that she didn't need Trundle's help.

Unfortunately, Trundle was, at this point, marching towards Trolberg with a huge number of other Trolls, planning to have the Trolberg Safety Patrol attack them so as to wake up the dormant Amma: an act that would destroy the city. Luckily, Hilda helped to prevent that outcome by convincing Ahlberg and his squad to allow the Trolls to march peacefully into the city, and not open fire on them. After that, it became a tradition for Trolberg to open its gates once per year to allow the Trolls to come in and keep both Amma and the Trolls appeased.

Roughly about one year or two later, Hilda and Johanna plus her friends; Frida, David, Alfur, Tontu and Twig, had all gone on an obscured vacation to visit Hilda's great-aunt, Astrid who lives just afar outside from Trolberg and within the town of Tofoten, a location rumored to be dwelling with Fairies. Where they unexpectedly ventured through the woods to return a lost Woff egg that a recognizable shapeshifter known as the Pooka covertly brought over to them, back to its nest inside a cave up on the mountains. When Hilda happened to discover a Fairy Mound, she and her friends. Frida and David had encountered all these strange floating mushrooms although while successfully, they got rescued by Johanna and Astrid but soon after when Johanna immediately decided for their vacation to be cut short as they all packed up and went straight back to Trolberg thus left Tofoten, Hilda began to experience through a traumatic dream in which she broke the charm that she got from Astrid but nevertheless, Hilda was enable to craft a new one herself after requiring an exceptional wooden substance: that being a single piece of bark from the Faratok Tree. She also went on a few unexpected adventures where Hilda would come across and meet others including Kald the ancient Giant; whose brother was captured in a parallel foregoing timeline by a child swordsman named Halvor, aka "the Giantslayer", and Eugene the illusionist performing merman.

When Hilda's father Anders came to Trolberg for a surprise visit, who aimlessly accepted a job from a crafty gluttonous person known as "the Polecat", she acompanied him to the castle ruins where these other two people also working for the Polecat, were trying to steal a treasure chest which typically belonged to a Troll that had returned to find them in his domain and would have killed Anders, that is if not for two mysterious hooded figures who immediately pull him away through a puddle and into Fairy Country. Unfortunately, this led to Hilda and Johanna to believe that Anders had supposedly abandoned them. In spite of that, Hilda missed her father and therefore wised he come back. Johanna then decided to take her and Twig on a road trip outside of Trolberg, however, without warning. They were attacked and eaten alive by a very bizarre amphibious creature, although soon got chronically regurgitated for it found humans to taste awful and therefore "befriended" them instead. Where they were soon told about how being considered as "neither one thing nor another".

When Hilda discovered that her father may have been turned in the Fairy realm with Victoria Van Gale, she along with Twig, Frida and David, headed back to Tofoten, where she and her pet companion Twig, journeyed into the dimension through the Fairy Mound as they eventually found and got Anders out barely but safely nevertheless. However, Johanna who also traveled to Tofoten, had gone and entered the mound in search of Hilda which in turn, forced her into going back and upon returning though, the last Fairy Mound crumbled to the ground. While looking for Johanna in Fairy Country, Hilda met a lost little girl; who actually was her mother as a child. Hilda then soon learned those two mysterious hooded figures were her grandparents: Phinium and Lydia, who both got stranded when they offered themselves to be taken in Johanna's place by the Fairy Entity after an earlier bargain of which they agreed to made on their daughter's 10th birthday. Typically, this meant Hilda plus Johanna were both Fairies (or at least part). Whereas Johanna finally regained all her lost memory from Astrid after so many years Despite how Johanna felt Hilda likewise, wanted to get back to the mortal world but alas, become of allegation over the Entity, prevented anyone from ever leaving. Thankfully, with some help from Twig and his whole herd, Hilda and Johanna managed to escape the realm although sadly, Phinium and Lydia remained as they couldn't leave nor follow them any further.

Upon arriving back into the human world, Johanna became suddenly ill again with that very same fever she previously gotten years ago while as an infant. However, she was reviewed shortly after when Victoria Van Gale took over for the Fairy Entity in an agreement which Astrid had plan on sacrificing her own life but instead ultimately was banished from her home forever, allowing them all to continue their lives in the human world.
