|Behind the Scenes|
The Houtua are a sapient race of underground-dwelling humanoids whose vast cities resemble anthills. They inhabit the Earth circa 20,000 years in the future, long after mankind has left the planet and the local ecology has been dominated by Godzilla.
Unlike previous civilizations, the Houtua seem to be at least able to coexist with the monster, even though they're still scared of him. Their religion is centered around the deity known as Mothra, whose egg is kept hidden in one of their shrine chambers.
Like all life forms in their ecosystem, the Houtua are chimeric beings, as they have incorporated genetic material from the other species around them, notably including insects and even Godzilla. The Houtua's skin is covered in tiny chitinous scales and they're likely related to Mothra as well. It is believed that they descended from humans who managed to survive and remain behind on Earth while the rest of the population left to try to find a new home among the stars.
Regardless of their partially insectoid nature, the Houtua still seem to be mammalian enough to remain viviparous, as they can become pregnant; and they're still genetically-compatible with humans.
The immunity system of the Houtua is highly developed and allows them to survive on Earth's toxic-filled air, water and plant life. Still, the air is kept clean inside their vast subterranean settlements, creating an atmosphere that normal humans can breathe just fine.
When they venture on the surface, Houtua hunt with spears containing nanometal, which they mine from the self-replicating remains of Mechagodzilla, and which can be used to kill local wildlife such as the Servum as well as the mobile predatory roots of the local trees. The Houtua themselves are immune to the nanometal, thanks to the efficiency of their own antibodies.
They're also able to communicate by telepathy among themselves as well as with other races, including those they'd never contacted before.

- The Houtua telepathic twin sisters, Maina and Miana, who act as shrine maidens of the cult of Mothra, are a clear homage to the Shobijin, a.k.a. Mothra's telepathic fairy twins from the original films.
