Inspector Gadget (real name never revealed in the series; given as John Brown in the live-action films) is a cyborg police investigator from Metro City, notable for the improbably large number of mechanical devices built into his body, which can be activated at his own verbal command ("Go-Go-Gadget [X]!", with "X" being the gadget in question) and will be retracted and stored back inside him when not in use. While Gadget's origins aren't revealed in the cartoon, it's known that his gadgets were given to him by Professor Von Slicksein.
While friendly, well-intentionated and highly dedicated to his job, Gadget is also a bumbling detective, extremely naive and easily-deceived. However, he always manages to solve his cases via a combination of sheer luck and the competence of his helpful young niece Penny and their intelligent dog Brain. His arch-nemesis is the evil Dr. Claw, head of the criminal organization M.A.D.
