According to Norse mythology, Jörmungandr, a.k.a. the Midgard Serpent, is a giant poisonous sea serpent which inhabits the ocean surrounding the realm of Midgard, and is so huge that it encircles the entire world and grasps the tip of its own tail with its mouth. This giant serpent is one of the three children of Loki and the giantess Angrboða - along with the warg Fenrir and the death goddess Hel. It's also traditionally believed that Jörmungandr is destined to battle Thor during Ragnarök and both will be killed.
Notes[]
- The word "Ouroboros" is often used to describe this creature and refers to the generic symbol of a snake or serpentine being biting its own tail - a common motif in alchemy and mysticism.
