Johanna is a half-human half-Fairy hybrid who resides in Trolberg with her daughter Hilda, a deerfox named Twig, an Elf named Alfur, and a Nisse named Tontu[Note 1]. Due to a memory-erasing spell, she spent most of her life unaware of her Fairy heritage.

Biography[]

Johanna is the daughter of a Fairy named Phinium, who explored the human world along with his sister Astrid. While there, he fell in love with a young human named Lydia, who lived in a wooden cabin in the wilderness.

When his daughter was born, Phinium knew he could never return to his own people, having broken one of their laws by interacting with humans and not wanting to leave Lydia and Johanna behind. Astrid decided to stay in the human world with them as well, so the whole family moved to a new home in the town of Tofoten.

As an infant, Johanna fell victim to a mysterious illness, possibly related to her hybrid genetics. Desperate to find a way to save her, her parents made a bargain with the Fairy Entity, who offered to cure their child if they agreed to send her to the Fairy world in 10 years, to balance out Phinium's (and Astrid's) desertion. Phinium and Lydia agreed at first, but then offered themselves to take Johanna's place. As the Entity agreed to this exchange, the couple went inside the Mound to never return, leaving Johanna behind in the human world to be raised by her aunt Astrid in Tofoten. To wipe out her emotional pain and prevent her from coming after them, Astrid erased all of Johanna's memories of her parents, so she grew up entirely unaware of her magical heritage. At some point, she moved to the nearby town of Trolberg, although Astrid didn't accompany her.

As an adult, Johanna found work as a graphic designer, met a man named Anders and had a daughter, Hilda, at which point she returned to the same house in the woods that once belonged to Lydia. However, Anders' sense of adventure and recklessness (inherited by Hilda as well) meant that he wasn't a very present father.

After the house was accidentally smashed by a Giant, Johanna moved back to Trolberg with Hilda and Twig, much to the initial despair of the former, who was fond of life in the wilderness.

When Anders got transported to the Fairy world by Phinium and Lydia to save him from a hostile Troll, Hilda entered the Fairy Mound to search for him, with Johanna following soon to try to rescue her. Once inside, Johanna was reunited with her parents and regained her childhood memories, but also found that, having entered, she and Hilda would never be permitted to leave. Hilda refused to accept this, and the two managed to escape, assisted by the deerfox pack summoned by Twig.

Outside the Mound, Johanna's illness returned, as the bargain had been nullified, prompting Astrid to offer her life to the Fairy Entity in place of her niece's. This turned out to be unnecessary, however, as the Entity accepted Victoria Van Gale, who was willing to stay inside the Fairy world to study it, as a replacement. Thus Astrid's life was spared, and Johanna's illness was cured again, allowing her to continue to live in the human world, this time with her memories intact.
