Kabutops (Kabutops maximus) is a Rock/Water-type Pokémon species which lived millions of years ago and has since been declared extinct; although a few specimens have been successfully cloned back to life from fossilized remains. Its juvenile stage is known as Kabuto.

Biology[]

Kabutops resembles a gaunt humanoid crustacean with sharp-bladed sickles in place of its hands and two clawed digits on its feet. Its head somewhat resembles the carapace of a horseshoe crab, although its eyes are very human-looking, with a black pupil and white sclera. Its skeletal structure reveals that it is apparently a vertebrate.

In prehistoric times, Kabutops was a top predator. The anatomy of its gills and legs has led scientists to believe that it was in the process of evolving into a land-dwelling organism, in order to prey on recently-evolved species which had likewise abandoned water in favor of a terrestrial existence.

Its feeding method consists of slashing prey with its sickles and draining their body fluids. It tucks its limbs while swimming to achieve a more hydrodynamic shape and wiggles its shell to propel itself at speeds of circa 29 knots.

Like many Pokémon, this species has an unbalanced gender ratio of seven males to one female. Although its body is usually brown in coloration, there exists a rare shiny variant which is green.

Kabutops' juvenile stage, Kabuto, is about 50 cm tall and weighs circa 11.5 kg. It is vaguely crustacean in shape, with a black body and shiny red eyes as well as two pairs of stubby, hook-shaped yellow legs. Its entire body is covered by a hard shell, on top of which is an additional pair of eyes - these being black and beady rather than red. This secondary set of eyes tends to be useful when the Pokémon is hiding itself on the sea floor.

Like some species of turtles, Kabuto becomes helpless if flipped upside down, as it's not able to right itself back to position. Pokédex entries claim that it lived about 300 million years ago.

Notes[]

  • Kabutops' scientific name, Kabutops maximus, originates from the anime episode "Fossil Fools". The only other Pokémon to have been given a scientific name is Oddish (Oddium Wanderus).
