The Knarl is a species of magical animal, physically indistinguishable from a hedgehog. They are known to inhabit northern Europe and North America, and usually pass off as normal hedgehogs for the common observer. However, there exists a fundamental difference in the behavior of the two species. Basically, Knarls are extremely paranoid. If one leaves out food for a hedgehog, the hedgehog will likely eat it. If one leaves out food for a Knarl, on the other hand, the Knarl will assume that it's being lured into some kind of trap and wreck the entire garden, infuriated.
The British Ministry of Magic classifies the Knarl as an XXX species, which means "competent wizards should cope".
Notes[]
- The claim that Karls can easily pass off as hedgehogs doesn't seem to consider their geographical range, as Knarls can be found in North America, whereas hedgehogs cannot. Presumably, people who see Knarls in North America will probably mistake them for escaped pet hedgehogs.
