Lucario is a Fighting/Steel-type Pokémon species, nicknamed the "Aura Pokémon" due to its unique ability to sense and manipulate aura. It has an immature stage called Riolu, which is a pure Fighting-type, and evolves into Lucario when leveled up with high enough friendship during the day.

Although it isn't a Psychic-type, Lucario are well known for their ability to see the aura of living things and manipulate the aura energy for offensive and defensive purposes. They can use the aura to foresee their opponents' movements, and some individuals of this species are even capable of using telepathy to communicate with humans.

When exposed to the Mega Stone known as Lucarionite, Lucario will temporarily shift into the form known as Mega Lucario.

Biology[]

Riolu

Lucario and Riolu are digitigrade bipedal canines with tridactyl hands and feet. They also have bony protrusions on the back of their wrists, which can be used to attack opponents in battle. Their eyes have white sclerae and red irises. Males are more common than females: the gender ratio in this species being of seven males to one female.

Lucario's ability to sense aura allows it to understand human speech, predict an opponent's actions, and create balls of energy to attack. A particularly well-trained individual is capable of sensing the aura of living things up to a kilometer away.

Although sometimes solitary, wild Lucario typically hunt in packs and communicate telepathically. Their physical capacities are formidable. Even their immature stage, Riolu, has been described as capable of crossing three mountains and two canyons in a single night.

The fact that Riolu cannot evolve at night suggests that members of this species have naturally diurnal habits. Wild populations of this species are known to occur in a few locations in the regions of Unova, Kalos, and Alola.

Notes[]

  • In Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, it is shown that Lucario enjoys chocolate, which is interesting given its canine nature as chocolate is normally poisonous to canines. It should be noted, however, that as a Steel-type, Lucario has a natural immunity to poison anyway.
