Universe Pokémon

Mantine and its immature stage, Mantyke, constitute a Water/Flying-type Pokémon species, originally identified in the Johto region.

Physically resembling a manta ray, this Pokémon is notable for its close symbiotic relationship with Remoraid, whose presence is essential to allow baby Mantyke to evolve into their Mantine form.

Wild populations of this species can be found in the seas around Johto, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, and Alola. In the latter, it is even held as a cultural icon due to its association with surf.

Biology[]

Mantine is a large Pokémon, weighing circa 220 kg. Its body is shaped much like a manta ray's, and it possesses glossy round eyes, a couple of antennae, two pairs of gills on its abdomen, and a ribbon-like tail. Remoraid can often be found clinging to a Mantine's underside and feeding on the leftovers from the Mantine's meals. Meanwhile, Mantine itself is an opportunistic predator, feeding on "things that swim into its mouth", as the Pokédex puts it.

Although Mantine cannot truly fly in spite of its typing, it can leap over the ocean and glide for over 100 meters after building enough speed. Members of this species have a docile nature. In sunny days, they form schools and engage in playful leaping over the waves.

Mantyke[]

Mantyke

Mantyke is Mantine's immature stage and, as such, hasn't reached reproductive age yet. It physically resembles a smaller, tail-less version of its adult form.

Like Mantine, Mantyke is a friendly Pokémon and is known to travel in schools, playing close to the surface, as well as accompanying swarms of Remoraid. Its long antennae are used to sense the sea currents.
