Kelly and an unnamed girl, two most notable Marra.

The Marra are malicious spirits that haunt the woods and attack people while they sleep by creating nightmares. During the day, they live as ordinary humans.

Biology[]

During the day, the Marra appear as perfectly normal teenage girls. When using their powers, however, their eyes turn bright green, and they gain the ability to fly, teleport, pass through minuscule spaces, and influence the minds of sleeping victims to create nightmares.

Being an all-female species, the Marra seem to increase their numbers by means of recruiting young girls to learn about their ways and transform them into Marra themselves. Despite their teleporting abilities, Marra will always enter rooms by the keyhole. They have a weakness to leather belts, which can confer protection against them.

So far, only teenage Marra have been seen, and it's not known whether they age and become adults. The Marra called Kelly does seem to live with her mother, but there's no indication that her mother is a Marra. Assuming that they do age into adulthood and have children, it is possible that their daughters will be born as Marra as well.

Culture and society[]

Marra are mischievous creatures that take great delight in frightening children. They often gather in groups at night to share stories with each other about the nightmares they weave and feed on the fear energy generated by them.

When they befriend a girl that they deem worthy, they may invite her to their gatherings and recruit her, intending to turn her into a Marra as well. However, if danger arises, they will not protect their new comrade, and will merely abandon her to her own luck.

According to Alfur, the Marra have no paperwork on file with the Elves, suggesting that the two species haven't been in contact.

Notes[]

  • They did not appear in the Hilda comics, nor have they been mentioned.
