Melisandre is a priestess from the far east of Essos and appears in the Song of Ice and Fire series.
Overview[]
A shadowbinder, former slave and a priestess of R'hllor, She was an adviser of Stannis Baratheon until his death, Jon Snow until she was forced to be banished never to be seen nor heard again. Originally from Asshai, she has supernatural powers that give her partial knowledge for future events, like the white walker invasion of Westeros. She can be described as a beautiful woman with red eyes (blue in television series) and always dressing in red. She has prophetic visions from flames and takes a militant stance against other religions from Westeros. Whenever she takes her necklace off, her true form reveals that she was an extremely old woman living for a hundred years.
In Season 8, she returned to Winterfell to support the living armies to fight off against the invading wights and white walkers by lighting the fire of Dothraki swords to charge. During the battle, she would chant to ablaze the trenches to prevent the wights to cross. In the aftermath, Melisandre fulfilled her destiny and accepted death following the defeat of the undead.
