Mellifers are an insectoid Wesen species. Like all Wesen, they are liminal beings which spend most of their time in human form, but can shift into their natural form either voluntarily or involuntarily, with the involuntary transformation being visible only to a Grimm.
Biology[]
Mellifers are insect-like creatures which resemble and behave like humanoid bees. They have a hive-based mentality revolving around their queen. Their natural appearance includes large compound eyes, short antennae and cerdae, although they also retain their hair, ears and teeth.
They naturally produce large quantities of apitoxin, which they can harvest harmlessly and inject into other creatures using syringes. It's currently unknown whether they have natural means of stinging and whether doing so would be lethal for them as it is for regular bees.
Curiously, members of this species also seem to exert control over large swarms of regular bees, which can be controlled to such an extent that if the Mellifer queen is killed, the bees that she's controlling will perish as well.
Culture and society[]
Mellifers are not naturally aggressive. Like bees, they will only attack when provoked. However, they do have a strong natural enmity with Hexenbiests. They have been observed to operate in company-hives, in which the queen acts as the CEO.
They're also known as the "clarions" of the Wesen world, sending warning calls when something important is happening. Unlike the overwhelming majority of Wesen, Mellifers show neither fear nor antagonism towards Grimms, apparently viewing them as allies in their feud against the far more dangerous Hexenbiests and other threats.
