Mermaids are a sea-dwelling humanoid species which inhabit the oceans around the Mushroom Kingdom. Despite their name, they bear no resemblance to traditional Mermaids, and appear more like ichthyoid bipeds with fish features and human legs.
Biology[]
Mermaids and Mermen are entirely covered in scales, with the exception of their legs, which are smooth and resemble human legs. The scales on their bodies can be orange, red, purple, grey, pink, or yellow, depending on the individual.
They have webbed hands with four digits (including an opposable thumb), fish-like facial features, and the females may possess head crests. Although they have no hair on their scalps, males may grow facial hair and eyebrows, and females have long eyelashes.
Members of this species cannot breath air, and need to wear water-filled helmets when interacting with surface-dwellers. Strangely, their eyesight is blurred by this, suggesting that they aren't perfectly adapted to seeing underwater.
Culture and society[]
They live in an underwater city named Mertropolis, and are ruled by a king. Their city has a domed, air-filled area suited for receiving guests from the surface. They seem to regard frogs as an attractive species, seeing as the Mermaid Princess was enthusiastic about the idea of marrying one.
