Minotaur, also known as Minotaurus, is a legendary creature of Greek mythology and a vicious, carnivorous hybrid between a human and bull.
The original Minotaur was a hybrid abomination born to Pasiphaƫ, the wife of King Minos, in the Island of Crete. Due to its savage nature and insatiable hunger for human flesh, the beast was trapped at the center of a labyrinth built by the great inventors Daedalus and Icarus, and fed with an annual sacrifice of seven young men and seven young women from Athens. This ritual kept going until the monster was heroically slain by Theseus.
The word "Minotaur" was subsequently adopted as a generic name for a race of humanoids with bovine features, and is present in numerous works of fantasy.
