Murtlaps are a species of magical rodent-like creatures found in the coasts of the British Isles, where they habitually feed on crustaceans as well as attacking the feet of people who accidentally step on them. They have a fleshy growth on the back which resembles a sea anemone. Said protrusion might be pickled and eaten by wizards, who have found that it confers enhanced resistance to jinxes and curses. However, magizoologist Newt Scamander warns against overdoses, which may result in "unsightly purple ear hair". Murtlaps also seem to have a mildly venomous bite.
The British Ministry of Magic classifies the Murtlap as an XXX species, meaning "competent wizards should cope".
