The Nguma-monene is a large amphibious lizard-like cryptid reported to inhabit the vicinity of the Dongu-Mataba river, in the Republic of the Congo. It has a long (at least 10 meters) serpentine body with a serrated ridge on its back. Its name means "large python" in the Lingala language.
Like many other African cryptids such as the Mokele-mbembe, Emela-ntouka, and Mbielu-Mbielu-Mbielu, the Nguma-monene has been speculated by some to be a living, non-avian dinosaur. Another possibility is that it's a kind of lizard, perhaps a monitor lizard, or even a modern day relative of the long-extinct Dolichosaurus. The monitor lizard idea is supported by the creature having a forked tongue, as described by some witnesses.
