The Niffler is a small, burrowing magical mammal native to the British Isles.
Overview[]
It looks similar to an echidna, but with fluffy black fur, and also possesses a magical pouch on its belly which can be used to store enormous quantities of stolen items.
Nifflers are most well-known for their instant attraction towards precious metals, jewelry and shiny objects in general, and are often employed by Goblins to hunt for underground treasures. They typically live in lairs up to twenty feet below the surface, and may produce six to eight offspring in a litter.
Although they display a gentle, affectionate disposition and can be useful to find riches, Newt Scamander claims that Nifflers should never be kept as housepets, as they can be highly destructive towards one's belongings. Similarly, Rubeus Hagrid has also said that it's inadvisable to keep Nifflers as pets.
The British Ministry of Magic classifies the Niffler as an XXX species, meaning: "competent wizards should cope".
Notes[]
- According to the special effects makers, the Niffler is based on a honey badger.
