Obelix is a Gaulish villager from the first century BC who acquired superhuman strength when, as an infant, he fell into a cauldron full of magic potion. The village he lives in is notable for having resisted Roman occupation, which is due to the fact that its inhabitants regularly consume the magic potion prepared by Getafix, the local druid, which temporarily enhances their strength to extraordinary levels. Unlike all the others, however, Obelix's super strength is permanent - a fact which he often seems quite oblivious too. He is annoyed by the fact that every time the villagers line up to get some potion, he himself is forbidden from drinking it on the grounds that he doesn't need it.

Biography[]

Obelix works as a menhir sculptor and transporter - a job which doesn't demand much, as the gigantic monoliths weight nothing to him. He is usually a good-natured and easy-going fellow, but also quite dim-witted and stubborn. His favorite past-times include hunting wild boars and beating up Roman legionaries when they try to invade. Although he's generally tranquil, he has been known to lose his temperament over trivial things such as disagreements with his friend Asterix, or people calling him "fat". However, he also appears to be rather oblivious to his own weight - resulting in some occasions in which someone calls him fat and he doesn't realize they're referring to him.

Obelix owns a small white dog named Dogmatix, who tags along in most of his and Asterix's adventures. Together the three have traveled to many far-away lands throughout Europe, and also visited such distant places as India and even the (then undiscovered) American continent. Obelix is also known for his catchphrase "These [x] are crazy!". The [x] in question can refer to any nationality other than Gauls, as Obelix is often puzzled by their different customs and habits.

He also seems to be rather unaware that he is stronger than other people, and is often surprised when people are unable to cope with such (to him trivial) things such as lifting up a menhir. He is also oblivious to the seriousness of the Roman occupation, and instead views the feud between Romans and Gauls almost like a sports team rivalry, being always overjoyed at the prospect of battle. As such, he usually presents himself as a courteous, if competitive, opponent.
