Bacterium oxyphilius is an ancient species of oxygen-feeding bacteria dating back to the late Jurassic period.

A colony of these bacteria was accidentally set loose by a hydroelectric construction in the Amazon Basin and turned into a cloud of moving black vapor that would drain oxygen from any life form it touched, animal or vegetable; leaving a trail of asphyxiated victims behind it. This deadly black vapor could move through both air and water, and threatened its entire ecosystem. It was vulnerable to mold, due to the latter's natural antibiotic properties.

Later, the bacteria evolved into a giant multicellular form by incorporating new strands of DNA, presumably from the organisms it drained, into its own genome. This new form also fed upon oxygen. Fortunately, it was sealed inside a cave, presumably to dissolve or even die after consuming the available supply of oxygen.
