|Behind the Scenes|
"Plantimal" is a nickname given to a chimeric combination of plant and animal created in Perfection Valley, Nevada, due to exposure to the compound known as Mixmaster.
"Plantimal" is a sessile gourd-like vegetable that contains sacs that produce a highly-acidic digestive substance. Whenever an animal touches it, it contracts these sacs to launch the acid and quickly digest the victim, feeding off the nutrients absorbed by the soil below. The acid it produces is powerful enough to dissolve a human body in seconds, leaving only a skeleton behind.
Its underground root system can potentially spread to over four acres, and it seems to take decades to reach reproductive maturity. It reproduces by launching thousands of tiny aerial seeds: a process triggered when the environmental temperature reaches 81 °F (~ 27.2 °C).
Like all Mixmaster mutations, "Plantimal" results from the combination of the genetic structure of several distinct species. Its digestive acid originates from an Amazonian pitcher plant, while the means to contract the acid sacs is derived from a Venus flytrap. A rudimentary circulatory and neural system, complete with neurotransmitters, is speculated to have originated from a lizard or other type of reptile.
