Rat Kings are mythological creatures found in European folklore.

Rat kings are composite organisms made up of rats whose tails have become entangled. According to popular belief, rat kings are psychic and can control other rats. They are generally believed to be omens of ill-fortune.

Origins[]

Real rat kings are occasionally found, but probably do not survive long in the wild. No one knows how their tails get tangled, but it is believed to occur when they get crowded into small areas. They are generally found dead.

In popular culture[]

The Rat King appears, portrayed as a huge and fully sapient composite rat creature in Hilda.

In the Grimm episode "The Rat King", the titular creature is known as the Riesen-Ratte: a 6 meters tall humanoid rat monster formed when a group of Reinigen merge together into a single organism, which is explained as possible due to all of them having a very similar genetic code.

The Adventure Time episode "Little Brother" features a villain known as the "Rat King" who initially appears as a normal rat with a crown, in his second appearance, he is a swarm of rats with a crowned head wearing a cloak at the top.
