The Sarmatian Sea Snail is a cryptid resembling a large sea snail with stubby paws and antlers, which lives in the Baltic Sea. Its peculiar appearance has puzzled naturalists since at least the 16th century, when this species was first documented in the bestiary called On Monsters and Marvels, by Ambrose Paré.

Biology[]

The Sarmatian Sea Snail is a large creature, as thick as a wine cask. It has a spiral shell on its back, a long tail, stubby clawed feet, and a couple of antler-shaped appendages on its head. The many tips of its antlers are adorned with lustrous pearl-like spheres. Its eyes glow bright like candles and its snout is reminiscent of a cat's, complete with whiskers.

Despite its unsettling appearance, it is of timid disposition and not actually dangerous. It spends most of its time in the sea, but can use its feet to crawl onto rocks and feed upon seaweed. Its meat is described as delicious, and its blood has medical properties that allow it to be used as an efficient treatment for leprosy.
