The Sea King is the monarch of a kingdom of merfolk, who lives in a castle deep in the ocean, with walls made of coral and windows of amber, and a roof made entirely of living mussels, each of which produce beautiful pearls.

At some point after the birth of his six daughters, the Sea King became a widower, and most of the house duties were performed by his elderly mother, who also took care of the princesses.

In the original story, all characters are left unnamed. In the Disney adaptations, the Sea King is named King Triton, whereas in the 1991 anime series, he is King Nestor. In the 1914 play The Garden of Paradise, he is known as the Merman Emperor. In Faerie Tale Theater, he is King Neptune.
