Shaymin is a mythical Grass-type Pokémon species originally from the region of Sinnoh.
Members of this species can shift between two different forms: the small, timid Grass-type land forme, and the adventurous Grass/Flying-type sky forme, the second of which is activated when Shaymin is in contact with the pollen of the Gracidea flower. This transformation can only happen during the day, as Shaymin will naturally revert to its land forme at night.
Biology[]
In its land forme, Shaymin is a small mammalian creature resembling a white hedgehog with green grass growing on its back and Gracidea flowers growing on the sides of its head. Like many powerful Pokémon, it can communicate with humans by telepathy.
While most mythical Pokémon tend to be solitary in nature, numerous Shaymin will annually gather with each other in the Gracidea Garden, where the pollen triggers their temporary transformation into sky forme Shaymin. Like most mythical Pokémon, Shaymin is considered genderless.
In its sky forme, Shaymin becomes larger, but also slimmer. Its legs become longer, and it grows a pair of wing-shaped structures on the sides of its head, which allow it to fly. This physical change is also accompanied by a behavioral one, as land forme Shaymin is a timid and cowardly creature whereas in its sky forme it becomes courageous and headstrong. Sky forme Shaymin is always a temporary stage, and will naturally revert to its land forme at night or if it's frozen.
Shaymin is also notable for its ability to filter down pollution. Polluted air is absorbed by its seeds, cleaning the air and causing Shaymin's flowers to become black. After that, it breaks down the chemicals and releases the resulting energy in an explosive attack known as Seed Flare.
Shaymin is known as the Gratitude Pokémon due to its ability to detect gratitude. Being in the company of someone who feels grateful causes additional flowers to bloom on Shaymin's back. Ironically, the Shaymin befriended by Ash Ketchum and company has displayed a distinctly ungrateful personality and a tendency to expect others to be thankful towards it without ever expressing gratitude itself. It's not known if this attitude is shared by other individuals of the species.
