Skullcrawlers are a species of reptilian creatures native to Skull Island.

Overview[]

These creatures got their names from their skull-like heads and their crawling locomotion. Their real names remained unknown since the natives of the island have been growing fear of them. They appeared to have large slender, but muscular dark brown to dark green scaled reptilian bodies with two long forelimbs, as well as long, prehensile, serpentine tails. Their "eye sockets" of their skull-like heads are actually empty fenestrae, their real eyes are set much further back, with the fenestrae perhaps serving to distract enemies from their more vulnerable eyes and acting as heat-seeking sensory pits. Their stomaches don't appear to have a capability to digest bone, as one was seen vomiting bones, including a human skull.

Although the fate of the skullcrawlers remained unknown by the time Skull Island was destroyed by storms, one appeared in Godzilla vs Kong as a test subject for Mechagodzilla.

Notes[]

  • One of their vocals sounds similar to an Indominus rex from Jurassic World.
  • Their inspirations come from a Two-Legged Lizard from the 1933 version of King Kong, No-Face from Spirited Away, the monster from The Host, Cubone from Pokemon, and Sachiel from Evangelion.
  • Their movements were based on references from komodo dragons, buffalos, and deer.[1]
  • During the production of the film, the reason why there were no dinosaurs in the film, besides a Triceratops skull was because Jordan Vogt-Roberts thought that Jurassic World was still fresh in everyone's minds and praises Peter Jackson for doing a descent job for making a Kong V-rex fight from the 2005 version of King Kong. So he instead tried to make completely made up creatures in the film.
  • The skullcrawler's role could be based on the Deathrunners and Gaw from the novel, Kong: King of Skull Island.
  • The skullcrawlers have almost appeared in every Monsterverse movie except for Godzilla (2014)
  • In The Novelization of Kong Skull Island, it implied that Skullcrawlers have hidden gills and can swim.
