Slowking is a Water/Psychic-type Pokémon species known for its serene nature and advanced intellect. Just like the similar (but dim-witted) Slowbro, it results from a kind of symbiosis between a Slowpoke and a Shellder. But while Slowbro is created when the Shellder bites the Slowpoke's tail, Slowking results from a Slowpoke which is traded while holding a King's Rock, causing the Shellder to bite the creature's head instead and triggering the transformation into Slowking.

Biology[]

Like Slowbro, Slowking closely resembles a bipedal and larger version of Slowpoke, although it also possesses a shorter tail with no white tip, protective plates on its abdomen identical to Slowbro, a ruff-like red-and-white membrane around its neck and an extra clawless digit on each hand. The symbiotic Shellder on its head resembles, appropriately enough, a crown, and is responsible for the vast increase in the intellectual capacity of this Pokémon, setting it apart from the dense Slowpoke and Slowbro. Some individuals of this species are fully capable of speech.

Slowking's increased intellect results from the substances that Shellder produces coming in contact with its host's brain. If the Shellder happens to be removed, Slowking will forget everything it has learned, effectively sending it back to the Slowpoke stage.

In Alola, Slowking are also known as the "sages of the sea" and are known to engage in intellectual duels with Oranguru, which will typically result in a draw.

Galarian variant[]

A regional variant of this species occurs in the region of Galar and is classified as a Poison/Psychic-type, rather than Water/Psychic. Galarian Slowpoke will evolve into Galarian Slowking when a Galarica Wreath (i.e. a wreath made from twigs of a Galarica tree) is placed on its head.

Compared to its continental counterpart, Galarian Slowking more closely resembles a sorcerer, rather than a king; as its darker shell and ruff are reminiscent of a magician's hat and cape. The Shellder on its head covers up its eyes and the Shellder's own intelligence has increased to the point where it is in complete control of its host. Groups of Galarian Slowking are often found chanting mysterious spells, and can combine their internal toxins with the food they consume to create new kinds of potions.
