He is a supporting antagonist in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and then is an anti-hero in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and as one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside the Witch King) of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
History[]
Sméagol was a stoorish Hobbit and a close friend of Déagol, but when he found the ring in the water, Sméagol became insane and then brutally killed Déagol. As time passed, Sméagol slowly began to change into a kind of monstrous humanoid, forced to eat nothing but fish from the lake while hiding in the mountains.
Notes[]
- During the production of the 2002 film, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, One of Gollum's design elements were inspired by American singer Iggy Pop as well as his infamous "Gollum" croak which was based on Andy Serkis' pet cat.[1]
