Smaug is the main antagonist of the 1937 fantasy novel, The Hobbit, Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy, and an animated 1978 film adaptation of the same name.

He serves as the overarching antagonist of An Unexpected Journey, then as the titular main antagonist of The Desolation of Smaug, and one of the two overarching antagonists (along with Sauron) of The Battle of the Five Armies.

Overview[]

The last of his kind, Smaug has been infamously known for attacking the village of Dale and the Dwarf city of Erebor during Thror's reign. Smaug entered Erebor to capture all the riches, including the famed Arkenstone which Thror was obsessed with.

Two centuries later, Thorin Oakenshield, Bilbo Baggins, and the 12 dwarves went on a journey to bring back Erebor from the greedy dragon. When Bilbo successfully stole a golden cup and ran off back to the front of Smaug's lair, the dragon woke up after his long slumber, realized an item had been stolen and sensed a thief in his lair. After his dangerous encounter with Smaug, Bilbo and the dwarves escaped from Erebor as they watched helplessly as Smaug flied towards Laketown for an attack. Following his violent rampage, Smaug was killed by Bard, before turning into stone.

Notes[]

  • To prepare his role as Smaug, Benedict Cumberbatch went to the London Zoo to study reptile references.
  • His concept appearance was designed to look "multicultural", combining dragons from all over the world.
  • He shares the role of Bigger Bad and overarching antagonist with Sauron for The Battle of the Five Armies, initially starting as the opening antagonist before being killed and becoming a posthumous overarching antagonist for the remainder of the film.
