The Smurfs are little blue human-like creatures that live in a small mushroom-house village hidden within the forest. They are "three apples high" and live for at least 500 years. Surprisingly, females are very uncommon naturally in their species, with only one known natural female existing — Nanny Smurf, Grandpa Smurf's old flame. Two females that were created through the use of magic — Smurfette by Gargamel and Sassette Smurfling by the Smurfs themselves but using Gargamel's original spell.

Biology[]

They are vegetarian and are only known to feed on the leaves and berries of the sarsparilla plant, the berries of which are referred to by them as "smurfberries". They appear to be a predominantly male species.

Reproduction[]

They apparently don't reproduce on their own but are instead delivered by storks. Where the storks get the baby Smurfs is unclarified, so that part is anyone's guess.

Notes[]

  • It is unknown where the forest containing the Smurf village is located, but all evidence points to it being an isolated location somewhere in Belgium.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The original term and the accompanying language came during a meal Peyo (the pen name of Pierre Culliford) was having with his colleague and friend André Franquin at the Belgian Coast. Having momentarily forgotten the word "salt", Peyo asked him (in French) to pass the schtroumpf. Franquin jokingly replied: "Here's the Schtroumpf—when you are done schtroumpfing, schtroumpf it back..." and the two spent the rest of that weekend speaking in "schtroumpf language".
