Snorks are a sapient species of tiny humanoid sea creatures which live in marine villages. Although they have been described in the logbook of Captain Ortega after his shipwreck in 1634, Snorks have mostly stayed hidden from humans and there are precious few who know about their existence.

Biology[]

Anatomy[]

The average Snork is scarcely more than an inch in height, and their anatomy is mostly humanoid, although with disproportionately large heads and small bodies. Their eyes are not completely separated, thus looking essentially like a single large eye with two pupils (although a few individuals do have separate eyes).

Their most notable anatomical trait, and the source of the species name is the snork: a flexible hollow tube sprouting from the top of their heads, and which seems to be used for breathing as well as swimming (although they also swim with their feet). There exist some rare individuals which have two snorks rather than one, and some that have snorks on the front of their faces instead of on their heads.

Their hands have four fingers, including an opposable thumb. Their skin color can be yellow, green, pink, purple or orange. When they have hair, it usually grows only on the sides of their heads and doesn't cover the base of the snork, although in some cases it does. Older males may grow facial hair, especially mustaches. Most also have black eyebrows.

Ecology[]

Members of this species are preyed upon by the aptly-named Snorkeaters, which live in kelp fields and can be attracted by dense algal growths. At least some Snork communities have developed a symbiotic relationship with the Kelp-Helpers, which are employed to clean off the algae.

Snorks are native to the sea and cannot survive in freshwater for long. There exists, however, a separate species called the Freshwater Snorks, which likewise cannot survive in seawater.

Culture and society[]

Snorks live in undersea villages and use clams and sand-dollars as currency. They also use domesticated seahorses as transportation and racing animals. In spite of the cooperative symbiosis between Snorks and Kelp-Helpers, many Snorks are prejudiced against the latter.
