Sonic the Hedgehog is the main character in a series of games and comics named after him. He is well known for his super-speed which allows him to go faster than the speed of sound. He has served as SEGA's third and ultimately most popular mascot, following the simian-like Arian Alex Kidd and before that, the intelligent spaceship Opa-Opa.

Sonic is most often rivaled by the villainous Dr. Eggman (a.k.a. Dr. Ivo Robotnik) and has a minor on-and-off rivalry with Knuckles the Echidna, although the two are more frequently allies. For years he served as mentor to the two-tailed fox Miles Prower, who has recently begun to quest out on his own. He has been pursued for years by fellow hedgehog, Amy Rose and he appears to have feelings for her as well despite outwardly referring to her as annoying; however he has had previous or alternate relationships in various media forms, including Madonna (during early conceptual stages of development), Sally Acorn, Princess Elise, and a hint at Princess Sara. He also had a friendship with two of his buddies, Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel.

Sonic can take up to multiple forms. Most notably, Super Sonic is a temporary transformation achieved by harnessing the energy of the seven Chaos Emeralds. This form vastly increases his power and allows him to fly and become nearly invulnerable. A rarer and even more powerful form named Hyper Sonic can be achieved by gathering the seven Super Emeralds (i.e. Chaos Emeralds that have been enhanced by the Master Emerald).

After being exposed to Dark Gaia's energy, Sonic started to transform himself into a lycanthropic-like form named Sonic the Werehog at night, remaining in that form until sunrise.

Notes[]

  • Although the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise officially takes place on Earth (or at least an alternate version of Earth), some iterations have instead been portrayed as taking place in a world called Mobius, which in turn has been variously depicted as a different planet, dimension, or as a future version of Earth.
  • In 2005, Sonic was one of the first game character inductees into the Walk of Game, alongside Mario and Link.
  • From an etymological stance, the name Werehog is a misnomer, as it would indicate a man turning into a hedgehog-like creature, rather than a hedgehog turning into a wolf-like creature. Presumably, the creators were either unaware of this, or felt that "Hogwolf" wouldn't sound as cool.
