The Spawn of the Green Abyss; a.k.a. Great Ones of the Green Abyss or People of the Abyss; are a sapient species of psychic amorphous beasts, claimed to be descended from the mythical Syrens, who were once defeated and banished to the abyssal depths of the oceans, but seek to conquer the surface world once again.

Biology[]

The People of the Abyss are strange creatures, known for the hypnotic songs they produce, which seem to be telepathic in nature. The songs can be heard by only a few selected people, and remain unheard by others. Those who have been in close contact with these abyssal beasts may hear their voices no matter how far they are from the ocean; and find it impossible to resist their calls for long. However, the connection goes both ways, and severing it on one end (such as by killing the person who's being controlled by the monsters) will cause the abyssal creatures to retreat into the ocean, as they need a mental connection in order to operate on land.

Physically, the Spawn of the Green Abyss are amorphous, and create gelatinous tentacles to move around when out of water. Despite this method of locomotion, they've demonstrated surprising speed and maneuverability. They are black in color, and their bodies are covered in a glistening bluish slime which is secreted by pores on the skin and emanates a foul putrid smell, almost unbearable for humans. At the center of their bodies there is a mouth, which produces the hypnotic chants, and above the mouth there is a single, serpentine tentacle which probes the surroundings like a sensorial organ and ends in a squamous orb that might be the creature's eye.

Despite their amoebic nature, the Spawn of the Green Abyss can still be harmed by bullets. Their blood is a blue, viscous and foul-smelling fluid.

Hybrids[]

SpawnOfTheGreenAbyss-hybrids

Perhaps the strangest aspect of the People of the Abyss' biology is that, in spite of their non-humanoid nature, they can still reproduce with humans. The children born from such a union will (at least in some cases) be human, but share a mental connection with, and be prone to being controlled by the creatures. Additionally, the People of the Abyss can also convert humans into hybrid amphibious beings directly.

The hybrids that result from both reproduction and direct biological conversion look the same: they start out as regular humans and undergo a gradual transformation that turns their skin green and squamous; covered in small glistening scales. They also develop bulging pale eyes and a couple of faint bluish streaks running along the sides of their necks and under their jawlines. These pulsing vein-like structures may eventually open up into slit-shaped gills; although this might only happen upon death.

Culture and society[]

Like their name indicates, the Spawn of the Green Abyss live under the great depths of the ocean, in a submarine empire made out of strange geometrical architecture. They are ruled by an empress named Zoth Syra.

When a ship passes over their empire, the Spawn of the Green Abyss are somehow capable of producing a dense oceanic fog around the vessel, and to cause a sunken island to emerge to result in shipwreck. The victims, being hypnotized by the creatures' siren songs, are unable to save themselves. Some victims might then be selected to mate with Zoth Syra.
