The umber hulk is a large, subterranean, predatory arthropod that stands at 8 feet tall with an ape-like build, appearing vaguely humanoid in body outline but with gaping maws flanked by pairs of exceedingly sharp mandibles. It is very smart and it eats young purple worms and anhkhegs but its favorite prey is humans.
An Umber Hulk's claws are as tough as iron, enabling them to burrow through the substrate and even through solid stone when the need occurs.
They possess the ability to confuse any creature that sees all four of their eyes at once, although the method behind this is not understood yet believed to be magic in origin. They most commonly inhabit the Underdark where they are occasionally captured and enslaved by other sapient species, such as the Illithids. Despite their bestial appearance, umber hulks possess a significant intelligence and language of their own.
